Tissue paper is convenient to work with since it has a coarse texture that wrinkles easily making it ideal for quickly creating texture on the flat surface of a canvas. Smooth the paper down with your hands to get rid of any creases or air bubbles. Tissue paper is generally inexpensive and can be purchased in bulk at retail stores that sell wrapping paper and gift supplies. You can buy specific art tissue paper for bleeding but we have found that some cheap tissue paper works just as well so just do a small test.

Start by cutting the shapes you d like to use out of tissue paper. Moving the paintbrush across the surface will encourage more of the color to release from the tissue paper. You can put them in a single layer or overlap them for more color mix. I used a paintbrush to add water to the top of the tissue paper.

Use the spray bottle to get the canvas fairly wet. The bleeding takes place once the tissue paper is wet. To adhere paper to canvas you ll need a decoupage glue like mod podge or an acrylic medium. I simply made a lot of random small triangles from the three colors of paper i was using but if you want to do circles or similar shapes a large punch can help with making those shapes quickly.
